Lula Côrtes & Lailson

Satwa brings together two figures from the Recife scene of the early 1970s. Lula Côrtes, a singer, songwriter, painter, and poet, was among the first to combine rhythms from Brazil’s Northeast with rock; Lailson de Holanda Cavalcanti, a singer and viola player, had a long career as a cartoonist. Released in 1973, the LP is cited as the first independently produced LP in modern Brazilian music and featured Robertinho de Recife. Years later, the American label Time-Lag reissued it. Lula would record Paêbirú with Zé Ramalho in 1975 and died in 2011; for decades, Lailson maintained a daily editorial cartoon in Diario de Pernambuco and died in 2021.
