THE BAND

Jorge Duílio Lima Menezes grew up in Rio de Janeiro, played pandeiro in carnival blocos, and received from his mother the guitar with which he began performing at parties and nightclubs. He took his stage name from his mother’s surname and, after Mas Que Nada caught the attention of a Philips executive, made his LP debut in 1963 with Samba Esquema Novo. His rhythmic style blended samba, bossa nova, rock, and soul, carrying him through both the Jovem Guarda, Brazil’s 1960s rock ’n’ roll wave, and Tropicália. The collection includes O Bidú: Silêncio no Brooklin (Copacabana, 1967), the 1969 album Jorge Ben, and Negro é Lindo (1971), the latter two released by Philips. In 1989, he began using the name Jorge Ben Jor.
