THE BAND
A guitarist and orchestral cellist from Belo Horizonte, Marco Antônio Araújo (1949–1986) created instrumental music that placed progressive rock in dialogue with the Baroque tradition of Minas Gerais, modinha, and seresta. In 1968, he played guitar in Vox Populi, a group that would become one of the precursors of Som Imaginário. After three years in England, he studied composition and cello at the UFRJ school of music and, in 1977, returned to Minas as a cellist with the state’s Orquestra Sinfônica. Working at an intense pace, he released four LPs, from Influências to Lucas. He died in January 1986 from a cerebral hemorrhage, the day before he was to receive an award from Veja magazine.
