THE BAND
Born in São Paulo in 1947, Rita Lee began singing as a teenager in bands that eventually led to Os Mutantes, a tropicalista group—part of Brazil's late-1960s countercultural movement—in which she provided vocals and percussion from 1966 to 1972. The collection holds three records from this transition: Build Up (Polydor, 1970), recorded while she was still with Os Mutantes; Hoje é o Primeiro Dia do Resto da Sua Vida (1972), released in the year she left the group; and Atrás do Porto Tem uma Cidade (Philips, 1974). Her breakthrough came with Fruto Proibido, from 1975, made with the band Tutti Frutti. From 1979 onward, she formed a duo with Roberto de Carvalho, the period of her greatest hits, and became the singer who sold the most records in the country's history. She died in São Paulo in 2023.
