THE BAND
Sílvia Maria Vieira Peixoto Araújo was born in Mariana (MG) in 1951, grew up in São João del-Rei singing in her mother's choir and was introduced to audiences in Rio by Chacrinha. On TV Excelsior in São Paulo, she appeared on Os Incríveis' program; she also appeared on Eduardo Araújo's program O Bom, later marrying him, and went on to record for Odeon: her first single, from 1967, featured two songs by Carlos Imperial. The LP Silvinha, from 1971, her third for the label, includes Roberto and Erasmo, Ary Barroso and a version of "Paraíba", a baião—a Northeastern Brazilian rhythm—written by Humberto Teixeira and Luiz Gonzaga, which led Nelson Motta to nickname her the Brazilian Janis Joplin. She recorded more than 2 thousand jingles and died in 2008.
