Tom Zé

THE BAND

Antônio José Santana Martins, known as Tom Zé, was born in Irará, in the backlands of Bahia, in 1936, and studied music at UFBA with Koellreutter and Smetak. Invited to São Paulo in 1968, he took part in the Tropicália manifesto album Tropicália ou Panis et Circensis and won the TV Record festival with "São São Paulo, Meu Amor"; his first LP was released by Rozenblit that same year. During the 1970s, records such as Todos os Olhos, from 1973, pursued an experimental course, incorporating unconventional objects into the recordings; after the tropicalista movement's peak had passed, he slipped out of the spotlight. David Byrne bought the LP Estudando o Samba at a used-record store and, beginning in 1990, released the composer's work through the Luaka Bop label, reopening his career to the world.
