Jaguaribe Carne

Brothers Pedro Osmar and Paulo Ró formed Jaguaribe Carne in 1974 in the Jaguaribe neighborhood of João Pessoa, combining experimentation and performance with ciranda, coco de roda, baião—a northeastern Brazilian rhythm—and bumba meu boi. They called their work cultural guerrilla activity: they performed in the street and in schools, organized literary and musical gatherings, and carried out social initiatives in the neighborhood. Under the military dictatorship, their lyrics were censored, and they were even detained after a festival in Recife. Chico César, Escurinho and Totonho were among those who passed through the group. The 1993 LP Jaguaribe Carne Instrumental, released by the Musiclube label, had a pressing of one thousand copies, each with a handmade cover by a different artist.
