Caetano Veloso

Born in Santo Amaro da Purificação, Bahia, in 1942, Caetano learned guitar in Salvador, where he also worked as a film critic for Diário de Notícias between 1960 and 1962. His professional debut came in 1965 with a single, while he accompanied his sister Maria Bethânia in the production Opinião in Rio. He signed with Philips, shared the LP Domingo (1967) with Gal Costa and, in 1968—the year of the album bearing his name—stood at the forefront of Tropicália, Brazil's late-1960s avant-garde movement, alongside Gilberto Gil, Gal, Tom Zé and Os Mutantes. Jeered at the festival while performing "É Proibido Proibir", he was arrested in 1969 and went into exile in London, returning in 1972.
