Baiano & Os Novos Caetanos

A comedy and music trio born from a Chico City sketch: Chico Anysio played Baiano, Arnaud Rodrigues played Paulinho Boca de Profeta, and Renato Piau completed the lineup. The name mocked Novos Baianos and Caetano Veloso in a parody of tropicália, Brazil's late-1960s avant-garde cultural movement. Behind the joke were carefully crafted arrangements for acoustic guitar, accordion and cavaquinho, and lyrics with a message: "Vô Batê Pá Tu" addressed informants under the military dictatorship, while "Urubu Tá com Raiva do Boi" took aim at the economic miracle. The first LP appeared on CID in 1974; it was followed by a second volume in 1975, A Volta in 1982 and Sudamérica in 1985, the year MusicBrainz marks as the end of the group's activity.
