Jorge Mautner

Born in Rio in 1941, one month after his parents arrived from Europe while fleeing the Holocaust, Jorge Mautner grew up in São Paulo and learned violin as a child. He made his debut as a writer with Deus da Chuva e da Morte in 1962, the first volume of the Mitologia do Kaos trilogy. Imprisoned after the 1964 coup, he left for the United States, worked at Unesco and served as secretary to the poet Robert Lowell. In London in 1970, he became close to Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. After returning to Brazil, he wrote for O Pasquim and began his partnership with Nelson Jacobina.
