Liverpool

Liverpool emerged in 1967 among young people from Vila do IAPI, a working-class neighborhood in Porto Alegre, with Fughetti Luz on vocals, the brothers Mimi and Marcos Lessa on guitars, Peco on bass, and Edson Espíndola on drums, playing Beatles and Stones songs at dances. The turning point came with "Por favor, sucesso", by Carlinhos Hartlieb, winner of the university festival in Rio Grande do Sul that served as a qualifying round for the Festival Internacional da Canção, in Rio. This led to a contract with the small label Equipe and the debut LP, influenced by Tropicália, Brazil’s late-1960s avant-garde movement, and psychedelia; it was reissued in 2009 by Shadoks in a German edition. In 1970, the band created the soundtrack for Marcelo Zona Sul, a film by Xavier de Oliveira; it disbanded in 1972, and its former members later returned as Bixo da Seda.
