Luiz Melodia

Luiz Carlos dos Santos was raised in Estácio, on Morro de São Carlos, and inherited his stage name from his father, the samba musician Oswaldo Melodia. As a teenager, he played Jovem Guarda, Brazil's 1960s rock'n'roll wave, and bossa nova hits with friends in the group Os Instantâneos, later called Os Filhos do Sol, and appeared on talent shows. A neighborhood friend, Rose do Estácio, brought his songs to Hélio Oiticica, Waly Salomão and Torquato Neto; through this connection, Gal Costa recorded "Pérola Negra" in 1972, and Maria Bethânia recorded "Estácio, Holly Estácio". His debut LP, bearing the same title, was released in 1973. He reached the final of Globo's Festival Abertura with "Ébano". He died in Rio in 2017.
