Quarteto Novo

It began in São Paulo in 1966 as Trio Novo: Theo de Barros on double bass and guitar, Heraldo do Monte on viola and guitar, and Airto Moreira on drums. Its role was to accompany Geraldo Vandré in concerts and recordings—because of contractual issues, the trio was not even allowed to play "Disparada" at that year's Record festival. With the arrival of Hermeto Pascoal on flute and piano, it became a quartet. In 1967, the group recorded its only LP for Odeon, featuring pieces by Vandré and its own members, and accompanied Edu Lobo and Marília Medalha on "Ponteio", the winner of the III Festival de Música Popular Brasileira. It also toured with Vandré before disbanding in 1969.
