Rogério Duprat

Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1932, Rogério Duprat grew up in São Paulo, where he studied cello and played in symphony orchestras. In 1956 he founded and conducted the São Paulo-based Orquestra de Câmara and later signed the Música Nova manifesto with his brother Régis and other composers. In Europe, he studied with Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen. After returning, he composed scores for Walter Hugo Khouri’s films and became the central arranger of Tropicália, Brazil’s late-1960s cultural movement, contributing arrangements to the collective LP Tropicália ou Panis et Circenses and the Mutantes albums. His own album, A Banda Tropicalista do Duprat, was released in 1968. Hearing problems eventually kept him out of the studio; he died in São Paulo in 2006.
