Ruy Maurity

Born in Paraíba do Sul, in the interior of Rio de Janeiro state, in 1949, Ruy Maurity was the son of the first woman violinist to join the symphony orchestra of Rio's Theatro Municipal and the brother of pianist Antonio Adolfo; he taught himself to play acoustic guitar. In 1970, he won Rio's university festival with "Dia cinco", written with José Jorge, a collaboration that would recur on several records through the 1990s, and made his LP debut on Odeon. Em Busca do Ouro, by then on Som Livre, featured "Serafim e seus filhos", his greatest success. Throughout the 1970s, he placed songs in Globo telenovelas such as Dona Xepa and increasingly brought his repertoire closer to regional music. He died in Rio in 2022.
