The Beatniks

Formed in São Paulo in 1965, Beatniks took their name from the writers of the Beat Generation and exchanged ballad rock, built around versions of songs by Cliff Richard and Paul Anka, for the English sound of the Beatles, Rolling Stones and Kinks. They accompanied artists of the Jovem Guarda, Brazil's 1960s rock'n'roll wave, in concerts, on television and in the studio; Roberto Carlos recommended them to CBS, where they debuted in 1966 with Cansado de Esperar, a version of Tired of Waiting for You. In 1967 and 1968, they recorded singles for Rozenblit, including Glória. With Bogô, Márcio, Nenê and Norival, the group disbanded in 1970 and returned sporadically in 1975 and 1984.
