Tim Maia

Born in the Tijuca neighborhood in 1942, Tim Maia began at the age of 14 as the drummer for Os Tijucanos do Ritmo and, in 1957, formed The Sputniks with Roberto Carlos. He lived in Estados Unidos from 1959, sang in the vocal group The Ideals and returned after being deported following an arrest for possession of marijuana. His first LP, released by Polydor in 1970, featured "Azul da Cor do Mar". Between 1974 and 1975, he embraced the Cultura Racional doctrine and released two volumes of Tim Maia Racional on his own label, Seroma. After breaking with the sect later in 1975, he withdrew the records from circulation; the shelved third volume appeared only in 2011. He died in Niterói in 1998.
