Trio Mocotó

Fritz Escovão on cuíca, Nereu Gargalo on pandeiro and João Parahyba on drums met in 1968 at the Jogral nightclub in São Paulo, where they were the house band and accompanied performers such as Clementina de Jesus and Cartola. Their jam sessions there with Jorge Ben produced the beat that became samba-rock. The name comes from slang in which mocotó meant the knee exposed beneath a miniskirt, and it became official in 1969, when the trio joined Jorge onstage at the Festival Internacional da Canção for Charles, Anjo 45. After the single Coqueiro Verde, they recorded Muita Zorra! in 1971, produced by Paulinho Tapajós for Forma, a Philips label. They returned in 2001 with Samba Rock.
